1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-047
Error
Description
A medium spread on LIBERTY is the primary identifying characteristic of DDO-047 on the 1943 Philadelphia Washington Quarter. The 1943 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver, a composition that remained standard for this denomination until the Coinage Act of 1965. That year — one of the highest-mintage wartime years for the quarter — saw the Philadelphia Mint produce well over 100 million quarters, and multiple working dies contribute to a substantial population of collectible variety specimens. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-0921 and DMR-056. Stage A was early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B (mid-die state) develops two characteristic die cracks: one running across the upper hair that extends into the field in front and under the T of LIBERTY, and a second running from the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER. Stage C was late die state (unconfirmed). The die crack from the eagle's right wing to the Q of QUARTER is a stress fracture pattern seen on several 1943 Philadelphia Washington Quarter obverse dies, reflecting the demands of wartime production volume on die longevity.
