1943 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1943 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1943 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness, with some separation lines, spread toward the center, appears on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date and the bottom of the ribbon. On the obverse, just right of the I in LIBERTY, near its bottom, there is a gouge; a scratch heads WNW off the L from its bottom right; two parallel scratches cross the lower ribbon; and a short scratch heads NNW off the upper right of the G in GOD. Its reverse is a minor doubled die too, listed in the Wexler files as 1943 WDDR-005: a slight clockwise (CW) spread appears on UNITED STATES and QUARTER. Its other marker is a horizontal scratch linking the tops of the R and C in AMERICA. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II+V+VI. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
