1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-040
Error
Description
Carrying the high sequence number DDO-040, this 1943 Washington Quarter doubled die obverse documents light spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the ribbon end. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-0507 and DMR-048, the variety was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia during World War II — the last full decade of silver quarters before the Coinage Act of 1965. Forty DDOs for a single quarter date reflects intense scrutiny of wartime silver issues. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at MDS with die cracks across the forehead, hair, and bust on the obverse and down the eagle's right wing on the reverse, and Stage C (LDS, unconfirmed). Light spread on four design elements confirms a Class I or II mechanism that affected the entire obverse die. John Flanagan's Washington portrait was in its eleventh year, and the 1943 mintage fed wartime demand for circulating silver coinage.
