1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-030
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-0316, DMR-031, this 1943 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on the LIB of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 19 of the date. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State showing a die crack across the hair into the field under the T of LIBERTY and a die crack on the wing under UNITED. Struck in 90% silver (0.1808 oz ASW), the 1943 quarter was produced during the height of World War II when the Mint operated at wartime production levels. While the cent and nickel underwent composition changes to conserve strategic metals, the quarter maintained its silver alloy throughout the war years. DDO-030 is one of thirty-one cataloged doubled die obverses for the 1943 Washington Quarter, reflecting heavy die production during this period. The light spread on LIBERTY and the date requires careful examination, but Stage C specimens are most readily confirmed by the prominent die cracks under the T of LIBERTY and beneath UNITED on the reverse.
