1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-027

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with identifiers UVC-0313 and DMR-028, this wartime 1943 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter doubled die obverse displays medium spread on lower LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the designer's initials. Struck on the silver-composition planchets used throughout World War II, this variety distributes its doubling across the primary obverse legends and date. Three die stages chart the die's service life: Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B reaches mid die state with a die chip forming on the bust above the 9 of the date on the obverse, while the reverse also enters mid die state. Stage C represents late die state, unconfirmed. The Stage B die chip above the 9 provides a secondary attribution marker beyond the doubled die characteristics, giving collectors two independent diagnostic features to confirm this variety on circulated specimens where the medium-strength doubling may be less immediately apparent.
