1943 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003 / DDO-017

Description

DDO-017, which Wexler numbers WDDO-003, is a doubled die obverse on the 1943 Washington quarter with strong doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-102 (Wexler: FS-25-1943-102). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 8 o'clock on LIBERTY, on the queue and the ribbon, on the date and the designer's initials, and faintly on IN. On the obverse a scratch heads ESE from the upper right of the R of LIBERTY, another heads WSW from just under the middle of the left side of the B, and a small gouge lies just below the Y; nothing is noted on the reverse. Billy G. Crawford submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 6-O-I. VarietyVista credits Lee Hiemke. Under UVC-0303 and DMR-018, an early stage A and a middle stage B are unconfirmed. In stage C the obverse is late, a crack heads east from the eagle's head to the wing (late), and a crack runs through E PLURIBUS, both wings and the wreath.
