1943 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Holding the lead position among doubled die obverses for the 1943 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, DDO-001 exhibits medium spread across multiple design elements: LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the ribbon beneath the bust, and designer John Flanagan's initials. This breadth of doubling — touching legend, motto, date, and detail elements simultaneously — indicates substantial hub displacement affecting the full obverse field. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0287 and DMR-002, three die stages document the die's working life from Stage A through Stage C. The 1943 Washington Quarter was struck during the height of World War II, when Mint resources were strained by wartime demands. Quarters maintained their standard 90% silver composition throughout the war, unlike nickels which shifted to the silver-manganese alloy. The designation DDO-001 and its medium spread classification mark this as the most significant doubled die obverse for the date, a priority attribution for variety collectors pursuing the wartime Washington Quarter series.
