1943-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-008 under die markers UVC-0335 and DMR-011, this 1943 Denver Washington silver quarter shows a light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the ribbon end, designer's initials, and date. Three die states are documented. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state introduces a light die crack across the upper hair, a light die crack across the bust extending into the queue, a die crack down the eagle's right wing, and a crack from S of PLURIBUS to the wing. Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The 1943-D quarter was produced during World War II when Denver struck silver quarters in substantial quantities. The light doubling spread across multiple obverse elements requires careful side-by-side comparison against an undoubled example for confident attribution. Mid die state specimens carrying the hair, bust, wing, and PLURIBUS cracks represent the confirmed attribution window, and these multiple crack systems across both obverse and reverse provide a reliable fingerprint for the die pair even when the subtle doubling proves difficult to photograph.
