1943 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004 / DDO-004

Description

DDO-004, which Wexler also numbers WDDO-004, is a doubled die obverse on the 1943-D Washington quarter with strong spread on the ear, the hair curls and the queue. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1943D-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a major counterclockwise spread on the ear, on the curls around the ear and over the queue, and on the chin and lips. On the obverse a small gouge lies right of the base of the I in LIBERTY, a crack crosses the bottom of the bust, passing through the lower queue at the right and into the field at the left, and an east-west crack passes through the hair above the forehead. On the reverse a crack passes through RIBUS of PLURIBUS and continues down the upper part of the left wing, and another runs down the outer part of the right wing. Whaden Curtis submitted it, and CONECA lists it as 4-O-I. VarietyVista credits Gary B. Shaffstall. Under UVC-0331 and DMR-007, an early stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B has the obverse in a middle state, a crack down the eagle's right wing (middle), and a crack running west down the left center of the lower wreath to the leaf above the U of QUARTER. Stage C, late, adds a crack across the upper hair and a crack across the bust into the field in front and the queue behind, while on the reverse a crack reaches through the Q of QUARTER to the rim.
