1943-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
The 1943-D Washington Quarter DDO-003 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-0330 and DMR-006. The doubling produces a light spread on the letters BERTY in LIBERTY — a consistent hub displacement affecting the central portion of the obverse inscription. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is the early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is the middle die state (MDS). Stage C is the late die state (LDS), distinguished by extensive die cracking: a crack runs through the hair extending behind Liberty's ear, and additional cracks develop across the field in late-state examples. The 1943-D Washington Quarter is a 90% silver coin struck at the Denver Mint. John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington, adopted in 1932, continued unchanged through the wartime years; the 1943-D is a common date in circulated grades but hosts a documented set of hub doubling and die crack varieties. The BERTY spread on DDO-003 is best confirmed in stages prior to the heaviest die deterioration, where the doubling remains cleanly defined rather than obscured by late-stage die degradation.
