Description

The seventh repunched mint mark documented for the 1940-D Mercury Dime, RPM-007 displays a D/D North repunching — the initial D mint mark punch was placed, then a second impression was delivered in a position shifted slightly northward (upward), creating a doubled appearance with the secondary image visible above the primary. This variety carries additional significance through its die pairing: the reverse is listed as DDR-004, meaning the same coin exhibits both a repunched mint mark and a doubled die reverse, combining two independent die anomalies on a single specimen. The D/D North direction is one of the more common repunching orientations, resulting from the die sinker repositioning the mint mark punch slightly during the hand-punching process that was standard practice during the Mercury Dime era. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury Dime design was produced from 1916 through 1945 in 90% silver composition, and the Denver Mint's 1940 production contributed to one of the series' higher-mintage years. The dual variety status — RPM combined with DDR on the same die — makes this a particularly appealing variety for Mercury Dime specialists, as it documents two separate manufacturing events preserved on a single coin: the mint mark was repunched during die preparation, and the reverse die received a doubled hub impression during its creation.
