1940-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Class II distorted hub doubling manifests on WDDO-002 of the 1940-D Mercury Dime as a spread towards the center on the date and slightly on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling occurs when the hub distorts between impressions during die-making, producing spread converging toward the design's center. The date shows the stronger effect, with IGWT displaying subtler secondary spread. Obverse die markers include die scratches running south-southeast from the underside of the chin, while the reverse carries a die scratch from south-southwest to north-northeast through the leaves right of the upper bands of the fasces. Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler 1940-D 10c WDDO-002, with no other known cross-references. The Denver Mint struck Mercury Dimes throughout the series alongside Philadelphia and San Francisco, and the 1940-D had a substantial mintage. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, this pre-war Mercury Dime preserves Class II doubling with distinctive die scratches on both sides.
