Description

Fifth repunched mintmark for the 1940-D Mercury Dime, this variety displays a D/D North orientation — the initial mintmark punched too low relative to the final position, requiring the engraver to reposition the punch northward for the corrected impression. Notably, this RPM exists on a die that also carries both a doubled die reverse (listed as DDR-001) and a doubled die obverse (listed as DDO-002), creating an extraordinary triple-variety die marriage where three distinct die preparation anomalies coexist on a single coin. Adolph A. Weinman's "Winged Liberty Head" design, popularly known as the Mercury Dime for its resemblance to the Roman god, was in its twenty-fifth year of production in 1940. The design features Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap on the obverse and a fasces bound with an olive branch on the reverse — the latter a Roman symbol of authority that took on uncomfortable political connotations during the rise of European fascism but retained its place on the coin throughout the series' 1916-1945 run.
