Denver struck approximately 21.2 million Mercury dimes in 1940, a production volume that was growing steadily as the pre-war economy expanded and demand for circulating coinage increased. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury dime entered its twenty-fifth year of production in 1940, and the D mintmark on the reverse — hand-punched to the right of the fasces — continued to be applied through the manual process that generated RPMs throughout the series' thirty-year run.
