1938 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID 1938-D 1c WRPM-009, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D South repunched mintmark — the primary impression positioned higher than the secondary, with the initial punch visible below final placement. The primary mintmark sits higher than on WRPM-005 and WRPM-006, a positional distinction useful for differentiating among multiple repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for this date. Several die markers strengthen the attribution. On the obverse, a die scratch runs northwest from the lower left serif of the mintmark to the 9 in the date, and a series of die scratches extend northwest from the lower left area of the 9, creating a cluster of lines near the final digit. On the reverse, a north-south die scratch appears in the field right from the top of S in PLURIBUS. The convergence of mintmark position, directional repunching, and these specific scratches makes WRPM-009 identifiable through multiple independent diagnostics. The 1938-D Lincoln Cent was produced during the Depression era, and the Wexler catalog documents numerous repunched mintmark dies for Denver issues of this period.
