Description

Attributed as Wexler Variety ID 1938-D 1c WRPM-009, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a D/D South repunched mintmark — the primary impression positioned higher than the secondary, with the initial punch visible below final placement. The primary mintmark sits higher than on WRPM-005 and WRPM-006, a positional distinction useful for differentiating among multiple repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for this date. Several die markers strengthen the attribution. On the obverse, a die scratch runs northwest from the lower left serif of the mintmark to the 9 in the date, and a series of die scratches extend northwest from the lower left area of the 9, creating a cluster of lines near the final digit. On the reverse, a north-south die scratch appears in the field right from the top of S in PLURIBUS.
