1938-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007

Description

Seventh Wexler-designated repunched mintmark for the 1938-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety documents a die where the D mintmark was punched more than once with slight positional variation between impressions, leaving traces of the initial punch alongside the final corrected placement. Cataloged as Wexler 1938-D 1c WRPM-007 with no other known cross-references, the variety is distinguished from companion RPMs by the primary mintmark's position — further east than WRPM-001 and WRPM-003, and higher than WRPM-002 — providing comparative landmarks that help attributors differentiate among the seven documented RPMs for this date. Obverse die markers include a die scratch south inside the 9 of the date running from upper center and a die scratch south from the right leg of R in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a short gouge on the left inside of the C in CENT, positioned slightly below center of the letter. These die scratches and the reverse gouge serve as fingerprints confirming the specific working die. The 1938 date was the final year before wartime production changes would alter Lincoln Cent manufacture, and each RPM represents an independently punched die in Denver's production run.
