1938 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

The 1938-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-007 is cataloged by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-3320 and DMR-013. The mintmark displacement is D/D South, with the initial D punch placed to the north and the final punch repositioned slightly southward, leaving the northward secondary impression visible above the primary mintmark position. Stage A die markers include numerous light die scratches running north-south across the obverse field, along with two die gouges near the rim at the K-2 and K-4 clock positions — markers that serve as attribution anchors when the mintmark repunch itself has softened through die wear. The 1938-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is a bronze composition coin, part of the Victor David Brenner-designed series introduced in 1909. Repunched mintmarks on 1938-D Wheat Cents offer collectors a relatively accessible series to study, as the date is plentiful in circulated grades, providing ample material for attribution practice. The north-south die scratches in Stage A are among the more distinctive obverse die markers in the 1938-D RPM series and persist as reliable identifiers across wear levels.
