1937-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1176, DMR-006, this 1937 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the D/D positioned to the Northwest. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows obverse and reverse in EDS, Stage B is MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The D/D Northwest repunch direction reveals that the initial D punch landed slightly to the southeast of the final position before the die sinker corrected the placement. Struck in 95% copper at the Denver Mint, the 1937-D Wheat Cent was produced during a period of rising mintages as pre-war economic activity increased demand for circulating coinage. Hand-applied mint marks on working dies were standard practice at branch mints throughout this era, making repunched mintmark varieties an expected consequence of the production process.
