1937 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Attributed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1937-D 1¢ WDDO-003, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent is the third documented doubled die obverse for the 1937-D date — cataloged on the basis of its distinct doubling characteristics separate from WDDO-001 and WDDO-002. The 1937-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint, identified by the D mintmark below the date, in 95% copper. Among collectors, 1937 is most commonly associated with the famous 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo Nickel — a die polishing error that accidentally removed the buffalo's right front leg — but the 1937-D Lincoln cent is an actively documented host for its own variety catalog, separate from the nickel series. WDDO-003's position as the third obverse doubled die in the sequence indicates that at least two prior dies for this date and mint had already been cataloged before this entry was established. The specific doubling spread, affected devices, and die markers for WDDO-003 are preserved in Wexler reference photographs. Collectors evaluating 1937-D doubled die candidates should compare directly against Wexler documentation to distinguish WDDO-003 from adjacent catalog entries.
