1937-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1937-D 1-cent WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1937D-1DO-002, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat cent displays a close clockwise spread from a pivot point at three o'clock on LIBERTY and a close spread toward the center on the date. A doubled eyelid appears to the west of the primary eyelid, adding a subtle facial diagnostic. Obverse die markers include a strong die scratch running north from the beard and ending east of the lips, north-south die scratches in the field below the nose and east of the lips, a strong west-northwest to east-southeast die scratch on the back of the forehead just below the hairline, and circular die scratches centered on the neck. On the reverse, a die gouge extends from the right side of the left wheat stalk to the left of the U in UNITED, and a diagonal die scratch runs between the lower area of the N and T in CENT. The three o'clock pivot point on LIBERTY is characteristic of a hub rotated slightly off axis during the impression process.
