1937 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1937-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1937-D Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A close clockwise (CW) spread, pivoting at 4:00, appears on the letters of IN GOD and on the LIBE of LIBERTY. Obverse Stage A: a short scratch heads NE off the bowtie and another off the right side of the date's 1; small scratches run north in front of the lips; a strong gouge (dot) lies right of the Y in LIBERTY, near its top; a scratch extends ESE from WE's W at its bottom left; and a short, strong diagonal scratch sits north of LIBERTY's R. By Stage B those scratches are gone but the gouge by the Y remains, and new thin scratches appear: one SSW from the E of WE at its bottom left corner, one running SW to NE past the 1's lower right corner, and one linking the upper left and lower left of the 9. Reverse Stage A: a short scratch heading SW off the left dot; two short parallel scratches heading SW from the lower left of PLURIBUS' P; and a scratch running NE from the upper left of UNITED's U. Stage B pairs the same obverse die with a new reverse die, which shows a short ENE scratch from the second U of PLURIBUS at its lower right, a SW scratch from the lower left of the E in ONE, and two parallel NW-to-SE scratches between the N and T of CENT. Albert B. Raddi submitted Stage A and Whaden Curtis Stage B. CONECA lists it as 1-O-V-CW; the Coppercoins number is 1937D-1DO-001.
