1937-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Cataloged as Wexler WRPM-006, this 1937-D Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched D mint mark where the initial and secondary impressions of the D punch are visible in the mint mark area. Repunched mint marks on Lincoln Cents of this era resulted from the mint mark being hand-punched into each individual working die, a process prone to slight misalignment that occasionally required a corrective second strike. The obverse carries several distinctive die markers: two scratches running to the northeast from the bowtie area, east-northeast to west-southwest scratches passing through the ear, and a die crack above the B of the designer's VDB initials. On the reverse, a curving scratch appears near the E in CENT, and a die chip sits under the first T of STATES. This combination of obverse and reverse die markers creates a comprehensive identification profile that allows attribution even when the repunched mint mark itself shows wear. The 1937-D issue had a substantial mintage exceeding 50 million, making individual die varieties relatively scarce compared to the total surviving population of this otherwise common date.
