1911 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004 / RPM-004

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-504, this 1911-D Lincoln wheat cent, VarietyVista's RPM-004 and Wexler's WRPM-004, shows a D/D/D South and Southeast triple-punched mintmark. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1911D-504 (012.83). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows four stages on each side. In obverse stage A the secondary mintmark shows a strong curve at its SE area with an upright bar inside, and a NW/SE die scratch lies above the mintmark between the 9 and the first 1 of the date. In stage B the curve is gone but the bar remains. In stage C the secondary mintmark is weak, strongest at its NW area, with die chips (dots) at the base of the bust between the second and third folds and in the field near the hair south of the O in GOD. In stage D a die crack runs NW from the rim at 6:30 to the bust, then turns WNW over the lower shoulder. In reverse stage A heavy gouges run in from the rim at both wheat ears, the left one above UNUM; they are weaker in stage B. Stage C adds a die scratch on the underside of the middle bar of ONE's E, and stage D a die crack running SW from the rim at 2:45 to the wheat ear. John Bordner submitted stage A, Paul Funaiole stage B, Brian Allen stage C and Mike Bruggerman stage D. Wexler also lists CONECA RPM #4, Crawford CRPM-001 and Coppercoins 1911D-1MM-004. VarietyVista, crediting Joseph Grommon, gives D/D/D South, Southeast. Under marker codes UVC-1079 and DMR-005, both sides are early in stage A; stage B, a middle die state, is unconfirmed; and in stage C, late, the secondary mintmark is very weak, a die crack crosses the lower shoulder, and a die crack runs from the right wheat lines to the rim, also late.
