Description

RPM-002, which Wexler numbers WRPM-002, is an S/S West repunched mint mark on the 1911-S Lincoln wheat cent, and both catalogs record a change of reverse die during its stages. Wexler lists CONECA RPM #2; VarietyVista gives no cross-reference. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows three stages, submitted by John Bordner (A), Paul Funaiole (B) and Lloyd Hanson (C). In obverse stage A the mint mark sits higher, and farther from the date's second 1, than on WRPM-001, and a short east-west die scratch lies right of the eye. Obverse stage B adds a small die gouge within the D of GOD, centered on that letter's right curve; obverse stage C shows a large die crack in the hair and die cracks between WE and TRUST. On the stage A reverse a die crack starts at the rim at 3:30 and runs northwest to the wheat ear. Stage B uses a new reverse die, with a die crack leaving the wheat ear eastward at 3:00, and in stage C that crack is stronger. VarietyVista credits Frank Bruske and Paul Funaiole and also calls it S/S West. Under its marker codes UVC-3505 and DMR-005, stage A has both sides in an early die state; in stage B the obverse is early-middle, with a light die crack running out from the right wheat to the rim at 3:30 o'clock, also early-middle. Stage C carries the codes UVC-1126 and DMR-003: the obverse is in a middle die state and the reverse die has been changed, middle die state, with a light die crack reaching the rim at 3:00 o'clock from the lower right wheat. A late stage D is listed but not confirmed.
