Description

Struck at the Denver Mint during only the third year of branch-mint Lincoln Cent production, this 1911 (D) Wheat Cent carries a cud error cataloged as CU-1C-1911D-01 in the Cuds on Coins registry. A cud occurs when a portion of the die rim breaks away completely, and the resulting void fills with metal under striking pressure, leaving a raised featureless mass along the coin's edge. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln Cent design had debuted just two years earlier in 1909, and Denver began striking the series in 1911 after Philadelphia handled the first two years alone. Early Denver Wheat Cent dies were shipped from Philadelphia already hubbed and hardened, then subjected to the demanding pace of branch-mint production where die longevity was tested by high-volume coining presses. The "-01" suffix in the catalog number identifies this as the first documented cud variety for the 1911-D date, establishing the baseline entry in what may expand as additional specimens surface. Cuds from the early Wheat Cent era hold particular appeal because lower overall survival rates for pre-1920 cents in collectible grades make any documented die failure from this period a scarce find.
