1904-O VAM-26

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in March 1983 and revised in 2010, the 1904-O Morgan Dollar VAM-26 is cataloged as 26 III2 14 – C4h, "Far Date, Doubled 19 and Profile, High O Tilted Left." On the obverse the date is set further right than normal — visible by comparison with standard 1904-O examples — and within that far-right date the 1 is doubled slightly below the upper crossbar, while the 9 shows slight doubling on the lower left outside of the upper loop. Beyond the date figures, Liberty's profile is doubled from the hair to the neck, cataloged as die III2 14 — an unusually broad obverse hub shift extending across the portrait itself. On the reverse the O mintmark is positioned high on the die and tilted slightly left (die C4h); polishing lines above the left wreath ribbon are the primary reverse die marker. The combination of far date, date-figure doubling, profile doubling, and a high tilted-left mintmark gives VAM-26 a richly layered diagnostic profile. The 1904-O was the last New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar before the series was discontinued, making its varieties significant as final-year products of that notable mint-date combination.
