Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1904-O New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is a COMBO variety combining WDDR-001 with WDDO-001 on the obverse. The reverse doubling spreads toward the center on USA and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the most prominent displacement visible on the upper left of the G in GOD. The obverse carries its own doubled die attribution with a repunched 1 and 9 in the date, making this die marriage doubly notable for exhibiting hub doubling on both sides. Cross-referenced as VAM-26, the variety also shows a die scratch at the hairline and a rim-to-rim die crack running through the eagle's right wing on the reverse, indicating progressive die deterioration. Tooling marks surround the T and R of TRUST, evidence of die maintenance or repair during production. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW), the 1904-O had a mintage of approximately 3.72 million pieces, the final year of regular Morgan Dollar production at New Orleans before the series halted until 1921. The convergence of obverse and reverse hub doubling in a single die marriage is relatively uncommon, making this COMBO variety particularly appealing to collectors who specialize in doubled die Morgan Dollars.
