Description

Attributed by Leroy Van Allen in March 1983, this New Orleans Mint 1904 Morgan Dollar carries the VAM-25 designation under die classification III2 13 with reverse die C4b, described as Doubled Profile and 9, O Tilted Left, and bearing a die pairing number of 181. The obverse III2 13 displays profile doubling at Liberty's nose, lips, and chin, where secondary contours of the facial features are visible adjacent to the primary design. The digit 9 in the date shows slight doubling on the lower left outside of its bottom curve. Additionally, the date is set to the left limits of the normal range for 1904-O issues. On the reverse, the O mintmark is tilted to the left, deviating from the standard upright orientation expected for New Orleans Mint placement. The convergence of three distinct diagnostic features across both sides of the coin makes VAM-25 an accessible variety for attribution: the profile doubling addresses the obverse portrait, the date digit doubling and leftward positioning address the legend area, and the tilted mintmark addresses the reverse. Van Allen's early attribution of this variety in 1983 established it as one of the foundational 1904-O VAM classifications in the series. =1904-O VAM-25 Doubled Profile and 9, O Tilted Left= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, March 1983.
