1884-O Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009
Error
Description
Triple-punched O mintmark displaced Southwest and West on this 1884 New Orleans Morgan Dollar, showing O/O/O with remnants of at least two prior positions visible beneath the final impression. Obverse die markers include doubling at the top of the 1 in the date — a feature shared across several dies of the period — plus a die crack running east from the right side of the bust to the 1, another crack heading west from the left side of the bust, and a short crack extending south from the bust point. On the reverse, a N/S die scratch runs inside the lower area of the last S in STATES. Cross-referenced as VAM #3 and carrying Wexler Variety ID: 1884-O $1 WRPM-009. The New Orleans Mint struck 9.73 million Morgan Dollars in 1884, and the manual mintmark application process — where a letter punch was hand-positioned and hammered into the working die — regularly produced misalignment, making RPMs among the most collected Morgan Dollar varieties.
