1884 (O) Morgan Dollar - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Primary repunched mintmark for the 1884 New Orleans Morgan Dollar, WRPM-001 displays an O/O West repunch — the original mintmark was placed slightly to the east before a corrective second punch shifted it westward to the final position. Obverse die markers include short die scratches running southwest from the eyelid and a short NE/SW die scratch below Liberty's eye. The reverse carries a short die scratch running NNE from the upper center of E in STATES. Submitted by John Bordner and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety is cross-referenced across multiple systems: CONECA RPM #8, VAM #14, and Wexler Variety ID: 1884-O $1 WRPM-001. The triple attribution demonstrates how the RPM intersects with the broader VAM system, where the same repunched mintmark characteristic is documented as part of a specific die marriage. New Orleans struck approximately 9.73 million Morgan Dollars in 1884, and the 1884-O date achieved lasting fame when Treasury vault dispersals in the 1960s released massive quantities of uncirculated specimens onto the collector market. As WRPM-001 — the first-cataloged repunched mintmark for this date and mint — this variety carries priority status for collectors assembling primary RPM sets for the Morgan Dollar series, where the manual mintmark application at branch mints generated numerous repunch varieties.
