Description

Cross-referenced as both VAM-11 and Wexler Variety ID 1884-O $1 WRPD-001, this 1884-O Morgan Dollar from the New Orleans Mint displays a repunched date — evidence that the four-digit date was impressed into the working die more than once, with the second punch slightly offset from the first. Before single-squeeze hubbing technology, date digits were individually punched into working dies by hand, and even small movements between impressions created the doubling effect visible under magnification. The offset produces secondary images of the date numerals appearing as shadows or displaced outlines beside the primary digits. The dual cross-reference to VAM-11 and Wexler WRPD-001 confirms independent verification by two of the most respected attribution services in Morgan Dollar numismatics. The 1884-O is among the most common Morgan Dollar dates in Mint State — millions were stored in Treasury vaults and released in later decades — but the WRPD-001 variety adds collecting significance through its die-manufacturing anomaly. New Orleans Mint production. Attributed by the Wexler Team.
