1884-O Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars of 1884 are well known for mintmark varieties, and WRPM-003 catalogs an O/O West repunched mintmark identified by the Wexler Team. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4 and VAM #9 and #11, and carrying the Wexler designation 1884-O $1 WRPM-003, this variety shows the O mintmark repunched with the secondary impression displaced to the west of the primary. Die markers aid attribution: a die chip appears on the bottom of the horizontal bar of the 4 in the date on the obverse, while the reverse carries a die chip at the upper inside of the G in GOD. These marker features are specific to the working die pair and help distinguish WRPM-003 from other 1884-O RPMs that may show similar directional repunching. The O mintmark was hand-applied to each working die at the Philadelphia hub facility before the dies were shipped to New Orleans, and positional errors during this process generated the repunched mintmark varieties that Morgan Dollar collectors have documented extensively. The 1884 New Orleans issue had a substantial mintage of 9,730,000, ensuring that specimens with this variety survive in sufficient numbers for collectors to pursue.
