1884 (O) Morgan Dollar - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

1884-O WRPM-003 is a repunched mint mark on the 1884-O Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as an O/O West. Obverse Stage A also carries WRPD-001, with the 18 repunched to the west. The die is heavily pitted, most likely from rust, mainly on the profile, and Miss Liberty's cap has a strong pit mark at its lower center. On Obverse Stage B the Stage A markers remain. Obverse Stage C keeps them and adds a crack that starts at the lower right of PLURIBUS's B and curves slightly SW across the top of the cap into the field under UNUM's M. Reverse Stage A has ENE/WSW scratches at the inside feathers of the eagle's right-side leg, and a clash left of the wreath's upper right leaf cluster. Reverse Stage B has many cracks. One starts at the top of UNITED's U, runs east across the tops of NIT, and leaves the right side of the T for the rim at 10:00. A second runs NW from the upper right of the N to the rim at 8:45. E/W cracks join the E and D of UNITED at both their tops and bottoms, and from the D two cracks reach the left wing, one heading east from its upper right and one ENE from its right center. A crack runs SSW from the rim at 11:00 into the wing, another climbs north to the wing from the top of the wreath's upper left leaf cluster, and a light E/W crack crosses the tops of STA in STATES. A light crack starts at the left wing, under the left side of IN's I, and runs ENE through the center of the N (Wexler writes N in N). Another crack begins at the lower left of GOD's G, runs ENE through GOD, then bends east across the tops of WE to the T of TRUST, and a crack runs SE from the lower right star's point. The clash is weaker, and the leg feather scratches are still there. On Reverse Stage C the Stage B cracks are stronger. From the middle of the upper left leaf cluster a crack curves south to the second cluster, ending at the top of its upper left leaf, and a die chip sits low inside GOD's O. The clash is weak, and the leg feather scratches remain. John Bordner submitted Stage A, and David Mulberry submitted Stages B and C. CONECA lists it as RPM #4, and its VAM numbers are #9 and #11.
