Description

Cataloged in the Wexler RPM Files as 1884-O $1 WRPM-006 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #5 and VAM-10, this New Orleans Morgan dollar displays an O/O repunching displaced to the south. The obverse carries an east-west die crack through the bottom of the date, strongest between the two 8s, along with an east-northeast die crack from the top of the S in PLURIBUS. Die clash evidence appears at the lower back of the cap on the obverse. The reverse shows extensive die cracking: a crack runs from the right center of the mintmark east-northeast to the last A in AMERICA, another extends north from the top right of the wreath to the right side of the eagle's wing, various cracks pass through USA and ONE, and a crack runs west from the left center of the ribbon bow through the leaves. Reverse die clash marks appear at the upper right side of the wreath. Submitted by David Mulberry, this variety's network of die cracks provides multiple confirmation points beyond the primary O/O southward displacement.
