Pattern coins proposed by John Kasson as a universal international trade coin valued at $4. Charles Barber designed the Flowing Hair type and George Morgan created the Coiled Hair type. Only about 425 Flowing Hair and 15-25 Coiled Hair specimens were struck, primarily for presentation to Congressmen. These are among the most coveted pattern coins in American numismatics.
