About This Coin
The four-dollar Stella was proposed at the urging of John A. Kasson, a former chairman of the House coinage committee, as a coin for international use. Charles E. Barber's Flowing Hair design and George T. Morgan's Coiled Hair design were both struck in gold (J-1635 and J-1638, on the pages of the Stella Four Dollars series); this page holds the copper, aluminum and white metal strikings. The Flowing Hair Stella was sold to Congressmen in sets with two metric dollars at $6.10, and unsold sets later went to collectors at $15.
