Description
The 1879 Stella - Flowing Hair is part of the Stella Four Dollars 1879-1880 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 425 Stellas of the Flowing Hair design dated 1879. The obverse features Liberty with flowing hair or coiled hair, designed as a proposal for metric-compatible gold coinage, while the reverse displays a five-pointed star inscribed ONE STELLA and 400 CENTS, with FOUR DOL. in the legend below. Designed by Charles E. Barber. Weighing 7 grams, 22 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #88057. The Stella ($4 gold piece) was proposed in 1879 as a metric gold coin close in gold content to the 20-franc piece of the Latin Monetary Union. Published figures are 425 struck for the 1879 Flowing Hair and from about 20 down to 12 for the 1879 Coiled Hair; for 1880 they are 15 or 17 (Flowing Hair) and 10 or 8 (Coiled Hair).
