Description

The 1849 Oregon Exchange Company Ten Dollar gold restrike is a later striking from the original ten-dollar dies used at the Oregon City territorial mint. Like its five-dollar counterpart, the ten-dollar restrike was produced well after the original 1849 minting operations using the dies created by Hamilton Campbell and Victor Wallace for the Oregon Exchange Company. The exact dates and circumstances of restrike production remain subjects of numismatic research, though they were created in the decades following the original coinage. The gold restrike faithfully reproduces the original ten-dollar design: the Oregon beaver on the obverse and the "10 D." denomination within a wreath on the reverse, with "T.O." for Territory of Oregon. The restrike may exhibit differences in edge treatment, planchet weight, and gold purity compared to the original 1849 production, reflecting the different circumstances of their manufacture. Restrikes were typically produced on purpose-made planchets rather than the native gold dust alloy used for the originals. The ten-dollar gold restrike is one of the rarest entries in the Oregon territorial series, with its scarcity compounded by the already extreme rarity of the original ten-dollar denomination. Collectors of territorial gold regard both the originals and the gold restrikes as legitimate and significant pieces of Oregon monetary history, with the gold restrikes valued well below the originals but still commanding substantial premiums as authentic die products.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. Gold restrikes of the ten-dollar denomination are rarer than the already-scarce originals. Fewer than 10 examples may survive. Among the most rarely offered Oregon territorial items at auction.
