About This Series

Base metal three-cent coins introduced during the Civil War to replace the silver trimes, which had been hoarded. James B. Longacre designed the Liberty Head obverse and Roman numeral III reverse. Mintages declined steadily as the denomination became unnecessary after postal rates changed. Proofs from later years are more available than business strikes.
