1865 Nickel Three Cent Piece - Atypical Die Clash ADC-3C-1865-01
Error
Description
ADC-3c-1865-01 is an atypical die clash on an 1865 three-cent nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The obverse die clashed several times and none of the marks were abraded; the reverse die was either replaced or abraded so heavily that the clash evidence was removed. At least five separate clashings can be seen on the obverse, and the dies tilted somewhat against each other as the clashes went on, which MDC shows in an overlay of the two dies. The clash is not a strong one for this series, but because it involves more than two clashes MDC raised it to the atypical class. The top of a Roman numeral I left five clash marks, with the tilt increasing slightly as the clashes move from east to west. The bow of the laurel wreath left marks that hint at multiple clashings, though they are weaker than the numeral's. Further marks come from the inside of the right laurel branch and from the top of the right Roman numeral I, again showing several clashes and slight tilting. The coin is courtesy of Joe Apfl.
