About This Coin
The BG-1300 numbers in Breen-Gillio list later copies, restrikes and imitations of California fractional gold in all three denominations. Some were made by Herman Kroll around 1906, apparently with some of the original tooling (Locke 2013); PCGS (search) places Kroll in New York and reports that about 260 pieces were found in his estate in 1923. Restrikes from Kroll dies followed after 1968 (PCGS, search). Other numbers in the range are copies not traced to Kroll, some of them struck in lead, white metal or brass (Locke 2013). Every number in the range that a source describes is a later copy or restrike.
