Description
This round half dollar piece, dated 1863, is BG-1305 in the Breen-Gillio catalogue: a later copy linked to the Kroll hoard, not a California piece of the 1852-1882 period. Herman Kroll made copies of California fractional gold around 1906, apparently with some of the original tooling (Locke 2013); PCGS (search) places him in New York. The PCGS title names H. Kroll & Co. NGC census: "\"1863\" ROUND LIBERTY BG-1305 KROLL HOARD G50C". Catalogue number: BG-1305 (Breen-Gillio). PCGS number 516777.
