Description
This octagonal quarter dollar piece, dated 1857, is BG-1301 in the Breen-Gillio catalogue: a later copy linked to the Kroll hoard, not a California piece of the 1852-1882 period. Herman Kroll made copies of California fractional gold around 1906, apparently with some of the original tooling (Locke 2013); PCGS (search) places him in New York. Locke (2013) lists BG-1301 as a Kroll copy of the octagonal quarter BG-111 with a different date. PCGS (search) reports about 260 pieces found in Kroll's estate in 1923 and says they were neither made nor used in California. NGC census: "\"1857\" OCTAG LIBERTY BG-1301 KROLL HOARD G25C". Catalogue number: BG-1301 (Breen-Gillio). PCGS number 516773.
