Description
This octagonal dollar piece, dated 1863, is BG-1307 in the Breen-Gillio catalogue: a later copy linked to the Kroll hoard, not a California piece of the 1852-1882 period. Herman Kroll made copies of California fractional gold around 1906, apparently with some of the original tooling (Locke 2013); PCGS (search) places him in New York. NGC census: "\"1863\" OCTAG LIBERTY BG-1307 KROLL HOARD G$1", an octagonal dollar from the Kroll hoard with a quoted date. Its restrike is BG-1307A. Catalogue number: BG-1307 (Breen-Gillio). PCGS number 516779.
