About This Coin
Octagonal one-dollar pieces of Period One (1852-1857), BG-501 to BG-534 in Breen-Gillio, with lettered numbers added for later finds. Makers known from initials on the dies or from attribution include Frontier & Deviercy (FD), the engraver M. Deriberpie (DERI, DERIB), Antoine Louis Nouizillet (N.) and Nouizillet & Routhier (N.R.); several early reverses copy the eagle of Augustus Humbert's octagonal fifty-dollar pieces (Locke). Six octagonal dollars dated 1853 signed by Deriberpie were among the coins recovered from the wreck of the steamer Winfield Scott, lost in December 1853 (Chandler).
