Description
This quarter dollar piece, dated 1857, is BG-1301A in the Breen-Gillio catalogue: a restrike of a later copy, not a California piece of the 1852-1882 period. Herman Kroll made copies of California fractional gold around 1906, apparently with some of the original tooling (Locke 2013); PCGS (search) places him in New York. A restrike of the Kroll copy BG-1301 (Locke 2013). PCGS (search) says the BG-1301 dies still existed in 1968 and were then used for restrikes, and that the Kroll originals are of low-grade reddish gold while the restrikes are brighter yellow gold. Catalogue number: BG-1301A (Breen-Gillio). PCGS number 516780.
