Feuchtwanger Tokens (1837-1864)
Coin Series
About This Series
Hard Times era tokens produced by Lewis Feuchtwanger, a German-American chemist who lobbied Congress to adopt his proprietary nickel-silver alloy for U.S. coinage. His one-cent and three-cent tokens circulated widely during the economic crisis of the late 1830s. Feuchtwanger's alloy, called "Feuchtwanger's Composition," anticipated the adoption of nickel in U.S. coinage by nearly three decades.
