Civil War Sutler Tokens

Issued by sutlers — licensed civilian merchants trailing Union Army regiments to sell provisions, tobacco, and sundries — these tokens served as private scrip redeemable at the issuing sutler's tent or wagon. Struck primarily in brass and copper with occasional German silver examples, they typically identify the merchant by name, the regiment served, and a denomination in cents. Sizes range from 19 to 25 mm with simple die-stamped inscriptions rather than elaborate designs. The War Department regulated sutlers through a licensing system granting each regiment a single authorized merchant, creating a captive marketplace where soldiers had limited purchasing alternatives. This monopoly position made sutlers both essential and resented. Tokens circulated within individual camp economies, functioning like company scrip, valueless outside their specific military context once the war ended. Surviving examples are scarce to rare, with many varieties known from only a handful of specimens, as the tokens were small, easily lost, and worthless after mustering out. Collectors prize them as tangible artifacts of daily soldier life during America's most transformative conflict.
