Copper and brass tokens produced privately during the Civil War (1861-1865) to fill the void left when government coins were hoarded. Patriotic tokens feature political and nationalistic themes — flags, eagles, cannons, and slogans like "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved." Cataloged by Fuld numbers, over 500 die combinations are known. These circulated as one-cent pieces throughout the Northern states.
