Lewis Feuchtwanger produced his one-cent and three-cent tokens in 1837 from his proprietary German silver alloy, promoted as a substitute for copper coinage during the Hard Times era. He petitioned Congress to adopt his alloy for federal coinage, and his tokens circulated widely.
