Civil War Store Cards
Coin Series
About This Series
Issued by merchants across the Union states between 1861 and 1864, Civil War store cards represent one of the largest and most diverse series in American exonumia — privately produced tokens that simultaneously advertised local businesses and provided desperately needed small change during the wartime coin shortage. Each store card typically bears a merchant's name, address, city, and trade on one side, paired with either a proprietary design or a stock patriotic die on the reverse, creating a remarkable snapshot of mid-19th-century American commerce. The Fuld reference system, the standard catalog for this series, organizes over 8,000 known die varieties by state abbreviation, city, merchant number, and die combination — for example, OH-165-BK-1a identifies a specific Ohio merchant from Cincinnati with a particular obverse-reverse die pairing struck in copper. Businesses represented span the full spectrum of Victorian-era trade: grocers, druggists, dry goods dealers, hatters, tobacconists, saloon keepers, coal merchants, and photographers, among dozens of other occupations. Most store cards were struck in copper, though brass, white metal, nickel, and occasionally silver examples exist, with typical weights of 2.5-4.5 grams and diameters of 18-20 mm matching the contemporary Indian Head cent. Congress effectively ended the practice with the Act of June 8, 1864, which criminalized private token issuance. For collectors, store cards offer a uniquely personal window into Civil War-era daily life, combining historical significance with the appeal of localized merchant advertising that documents businesses and communities often otherwise lost to the historical record.
